The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is calling on all nations to vaccinate 70 percent of the world population by the middle of 2022.
More than 4.53 billion people worldwide have received a dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, equal to about 59.1 percent of the world population and roughly 50 percent of the global population are fully vaccinated, according to the NYT Covid tracker.
Much of the vaccination disparity is in the Middle East and African regions (see below).
According to the WHO, one of the hurdles in achieving the target of 70% of total population coverage in all countries by mid-2022 will be “demand limits arising from widespread misinformation and its resulting vaccine hesitancy.“
