The U.S. has thrown out 82.1 million COVID-19 vaccine doses from December 2020 to the middle of May 2022, according to data from the CDC.
That number accounts for more than 11% of the doses distributed by the federal government during the pandemic, reports NBC News.
The latest figures represent a large spike since late February, when roughly 65 million doses were estimated to have been wasted, according to the Associated Press.
Less than half of “fully vaccinated” adults in the U.S. have received their first booster shot, per CDC data.
