A safety panel of the European drug regulator on Friday (Jan. 14) recommended adding a rare spinal inflammation called transverse myelitis as a side effect of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine.

"…it is important to bear in mind the possibility that the mRNA-based vaccine may induce transverse myelitis, probably related to autoimmune mechanisms." pic.twitter.com/ESjiFyMhPo
The European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) safety committee also recommended a similar warning be included for Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot vaccine in October.
EMA adds transverse myelitis to the list of C19-vaccines' adverse effects. They state that it's 'very rare', of course. Eudravigilance counts 5,590 cases of myelitis and neuritis of which 67 have died and 224 suffered permanent damage, so it's mild, too. https://t.co/lXlhQllv8t pic.twitter.com/PCpZzcnA4X

Transverse myelitis is an inflammation of one or both sides of the spinal cord and can cause weakness in the arms or legs, sensory symptoms or problems with bladder or bowel function.
