Banks begin to freeze accounts as the Canadian PM Trudeau ordered a crackdown on the trucker protesters and its supporters
Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland announced on Thursday (Feb. 17) that banks and other financial institutions have moved quickly to freeze the personal accounts of anyone linked to the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa, leaving an unknown number of people in financial limbo.
Freeland vowed to take more accounts offline in the coming days as the government attempts to starve the organizers of what they need to continue their protest against COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
Freeland, who is also Canada’s finance minister and sits on the World Economic Forum’s board of trustees, said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other law enforcement agencies have been gathering intelligence on Freedom Convoy protesters and their supporters to share that information with financial institutions to restrict access to cash and cryptocurrency.
