Thousands of people in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday (Jan. 8) marched against the mandatory digital COVID-19 vaccine passport for access to restaurants, hotels, gyms or cultural events beginning on Monday (Jan. 10).

“Is freedom certified?”, “Is freedom digital?”, “Do you have to lose your freedom to have health?” and “Are you free until your next dose?” were some of the questions raised by protesters through signs.

Criticizing the role of the media, José Duarte, 67, said that the protest “has nothing to do with vaccines, being anti-vaccinations or being against vaccines, it is a matter of freedom.”

Protests against the mandate took place simultaneously in at least five cities—Lisbon, Porto, Quarteira, Ponta Delgada and Funchal.
