Austria is ordering millions of people not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 into a national lockdown as of Monday (Nov. 15) to deal with a record surge in new infections.
“We must raise the vaccination rate. It is shamefully low,” Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said after announcing the new measure after a video call with the governors of Austria’s nine provinces.
The new restrictions go into effect at midnight tonight and will be enforced on an “unprecedented scale,” with fines of up to 30,000 euros.
