Nearly one third of healthcare workers at U.S. hospitals are still not vaccinated against COVID-19, according to research from the CDC, as tensions escalate over a contested nationwide mandate that officials worry will leave the sector with a shortage of critical workers.

The study, published in the American Journal of Infection Control on Wednesday (Nov. 17), suggests nearly one million healthcare workers across the U.S. were not vaccinated against COVID-19 as of September 15.

Critical access hospitals had the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rate, with at least 36% of workers unvaccinated
